(A 5 minute read)

Hey there friend, welcome back to another blog post from your friendly neighbourhood vegan, Rae Likes Froot! How are you doing? I feel like we haven't spoke in a long o'l time! Autumn is finally here and I've got a little review to share with you today.

I was recently aproached by The Honestly Good Smoothie Company and asked if I would review some of their 100% organic, "blend it yourself" smoothie kits, now if you know me or follow me on Instagram *cough* @raelikesfroot *cough* then you would see from my stories that I'm partial to a cheeky smoothie or juice on a regular basis. They are an easy, healthy (and can be) cheap meal/snack on the go. And for someone like me who has a pretty hectic lifestyle they are a necessity!

" The Honestly Good Smoothie Co. was founded by Vikesh Kotecha and his mum Neeta. Vikesh was suffering from some digestive issues and it was recommended that he try smoothies. He found that they had a hugely positive effect on his health and energy levels. Honestly Good smoothies incorporate all sorts of weird and wonderful fruit, veg, nuts, herbs, seeds & superfoods that you might not usually see in a smoothie, such as cauliflower, sumac, maca root powder, baobab, cacao nibs, broccoli, kelp powder, hemp protein, tofu, dried mulberries, and sweet potato."

All of their packaging is recyclable which is a huge bonus for me as I'm very conscious of my plastic waste and I'm sure many of you are too! THGSC offer a subscription service where you can choose from 5 or 10 hand prepped smoothies either weekly, fortnightly or monthly at £27.50 for 5 and £47.50 for 10 (which may seem a little pricey, but that's subjective and don't forget these are all organic!)

I was sent some of their smoothies to try out, and have given my honest thoughts below.

The Choc Banana Sundae

Banana, Apple, Blueberry, Avocado with Cacao nibs, Coconut and Red Maca Root

This fruity, chocolatey flavour was the first kit I reached for. My favourite smoothie is banana, cacao, dates and water so I was VERY excited to see they offered a similar one.

It blended very easily, I added the contents of the bag into my largest Nutribullet cup, added 2 cups of water let it sit for around 30 seconds to defrost the contents a little and blended for a further 30 seconds

(I used this method with all the smoothies)

The smell was very fruity, it smelt like strawberries with a hint of chocolate (weird as there were no strawberries in the mix!) and was a beautiful purplish blue colour with spots of a darker blue (from the blueberries) It tasted unlike any other smoothie I've had and not what I was expecting at all, it was light and refreshing but I didn't taste much fruit I could really taste the cacao (which I like) I think I could have used a sweetened plant based milk to blend this smoothie as it would have given it an sweeter taste, as opposed to just using water.

Cucumber, Blueberry, White Grape, Beetroot, Avocado with Buckwheat and Sunflower seeds

Now this one I found a little more interesting, I've never heard of a smoothie that contains beetroot and avocado in the same mix, but strangely it worked. I really enjoyed this one even though it wasn't as sweet so I did end up adding some sweetened soy milk and this really helped.

This was a great smoothie to have first thing in the morning! I found this mixture a little easier to blend than some of the others maybe because there were not so many hard vegetables. The outcome was a pale purplish colour and there wasn't much of a strong smell.

The Smoothie Spice

Apple, Carrot and Beetroot with Brazil nuts, Ginger, Goji Berries, Mint and Turmeric

When I picked up the smoothie spice I was very impressed by the ingredients list. I would have never thought to put turmeric in any of my smoothies, but then maybe I'm just very unimaginative!

I think this smoothie is really an acquired taste, if you aren't a huge fan of turmeric or ginger which I know a lot of people aren't then you may not like The Smoothie Spice as those flavours are very prominent in this mixture.

Out of all the smoothies I tried Smoothie Spice was the hardest to blend and had eventually just enjoy it as a smoothie bowl!

I did however love the Autumnal-ness of this smoothie, it smelled spicy and warm but was still not very sweet. If they could have swapped the carrot for some red berries, I feel like that would have given The Smoothie Spice an amazing fruity edge and taken the heat off all that ginger and turmeric.

Final Thoughts

I love that The Honestly Good Smoothie Company are offering smoothie recipes that are unlike the standard "banana and berry" this sets them apart from other brands. You can really tell that they have put a lot of thought into the ingredients and the health benefits behind them and I hope they continue to really think outside of the box when it comes to creating these healthy smoothie kits.

I do have some constructive criticism that I feel would be very beneficial to this young brand.

As a consumer and somebody who LOVES a good smoothie I would have liked to have seen more berries being used in the kits as this would give them more of a creamy texture and sweeter flavour that I feel would be more popular with the average smoothie drinker.

As the smoothie kits are quite veg heavy and include a lot of hard to blend ingredients like carrot & beetroot this can result in quite a thick smoothie. I'm assuming the majority of you have standard, more affordable blenders in your homes as I do, which is fine but to be able to fully blend some of these smoothie kits to their desired consistency you do really need something high powered if you don't want to add a lot of water and end up changing the taste of the smoothie.

Overall I am very impressed by all of the small details that THGSC has thought about when creating these kits; making them organic, recyclable, healthy & balanced I really look forward to seeing where they take this amazing brand!

Thank you

To THGSC for the smoothies and asking me to review, I have left links to their social media and website below so you can check them out for yourself.
